Long distances
For lovers of longer distances, there is the Western Front Way - Via Sacra and the Via Yprensis.
- Western Front Way - Via Sacra
You follow the front line from Nieuwpoort over Diksmuide and Ypres to Messines over Belgian territory or all the way to Pfetterhouse (Switzerland). You can also follow the route in the opposite direction, as the Western Front Way - Via Sacra is signposted in 2 directions.
- The hiking guide in English (route over Belgian territory) can be purchased from us for €6.
- The Western Front Way app navigates you along the 1,000 km of trails in Europe and gives you lots of additional background information during your route.
Via Yprensis
The Via Yperensis puts you on the road to Santiago de Compostela. The name 'Yprensis' refers to Ypres, starts in Nieuwpoort and passes through Diksmuide and Sint-Jacobskapelle. The thought of World War I is never far away here. The route is signposted with blue signs with a yellow scallop shell and leads through nature reserves and small villages on car-free roads to Ypres. This pilgrimage route connects to the Via 'Brugensis', which in turn joins the French roads to Santiago de Compostela in Arras.
Check out the route of the Via Yprensis here.
